What Fridge Fits a Fermzilla 30L and a 19L Cornelius Keg? A Compact Homebrewer’s Buying Guide
Start with the actual numbers
The Fermzilla 30L All Rounder stands around 57 cm assembled on its base, and reaches about 62 cm once you add a spunding valve or airlock on top. A standard 19L Cornelius keg sits somewhere in the 56–64 cm range depending on manufacturer, with a diameter of roughly 21–23 cm. That means you need about 65–67 cm of usable internal fridge height to fit either piece with comfortable clearance. Often the keg is the tighter fit, not the Fermzilla.
A fridge under 100 cm external height is entirely achievable. The problem is just different from what most people expect.
Two things that eat your interior height
Most compact undercounter fridges list an external height of 82–85 cm. That sounds generous. But usable internal height is almost always less, and there are two specific culprits.
The first is the compressor housing. In many undercounter models, the compressor sits behind a raised hump at the rear bottom of the interior. It can stop a wide vessel from sitting flat and may reduce the effective clearance at the back of the shelf. Not always a dealbreaker, but worth physically checking.
The second — and far more common — is the built-in freezer compartment. A large proportion of compact fridges have a small ice box recessed into the top of the interior. It looks like a minor detail. It isn’t. That feature alone can drop your effective ceiling height by 10–15 cm, pushing what should be a spacious 75 cm interior down to around 60 cm. Right at the limit of what you need.
The fridge type that actually solves this
Look for an undercounter larder fridge — no freezer section, no ice box, just a full-height refrigerator compartment. In Norwegian retail these are sometimes listed as kjøleskap uten fryseboks. At around 82–85 cm external height, a larder fridge typically gives 75–82 cm of usable interior. Both the Fermzilla 30L and a standard Cornelius keg fit with clearance to spare.
Wine coolers get mentioned in homebrewing forums as a space-saving option. The interiors are usually clean — no rear hump, no ice box. The catch is temperature range. Many wine coolers only cool down to around 8–10°C, which handles active fermentation but won’t get you a proper cold crash or a decent serving temperature. Check the minimum spec. You want something that can reach 1–4°C.
One fridge, two jobs
Fermenting in the Fermzilla and then conditioning the Cornelius keg in the same fridge is a practical system. They just can’t be in there simultaneously. Finish one batch, transfer it, then start the next. For a single-batch homebrew setup that is rarely a real constraint.
The bigger practical issue is temperature range. A fridge’s built-in thermostat typically bottoms out at 4–7°C — too cold for most ale fermentations, too warm for cold conditioning. An external temperature controller fixes both. The Inkbird ITC-308 is widely used in the homebrewing community: it plugs between the fridge and the wall socket, reads a probe inside the cabinet, and switches the compressor on and off to hold your target temperature. One fridge, one controller, and you can switch between fermentation mode and cold-conditioning mode at will.
How to check internal dimensions before you buy
Most retailer product pages do not list internal height. Three ways around this:
- Check the user Q&A section on the product listing. Other homebrewers have often already asked this exact question and received a reply from the seller or manufacturer.
- Search for the model’s service manual or installation guide. These reliably list interior cavity dimensions that never appear on the retail page.
- Bring a tape measure to a physical store. Check for a freezer box at the top interior, then measure from the rear floor hump up to the ceiling.
If the internal measurement from hump to ceiling clears 67 cm, you are good for both pieces of kit. Find that in an undercounter larder fridge and you have your answer.
